AI Meets Project Management: What I Learned Building StreamConnect AI

Introduction

I developed a digital innovation project called StreamConnect AI. The idea behind the project was to design an AI-driven customer retention and next-best-offer platform for media and telecom companies.

I created this project not only as an academic assignment, but also as a practical way to showcase skills that are highly relevant in IT services and consulting: project planning, stakeholder analysis, Agile delivery, AI solution design, risk management, scheduling, critical path analysis, and change readiness.

The files for this project are available in my GitHub repository:

Project Concept: What Is StreamConnect AI?

StreamConnect AI is a proposed AI-powered customer retention platform for Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) companies. The platform is designed for companies that provide streaming subscriptions, broadband internet, mobile services, and bundled entertainment packages.

The core business problem is simple:

Customers can easily cancel, downgrade, or switch providers. Companies need smarter ways to retain them before they leave.

StreamConnect AI would analyze data from CRM, billing, subscriptions, service tickets, customer usage, and interaction history. When a customer contacts support to cancel, downgrade, or complain, the platform would calculate churn risk and recommend the next-best-offer.

For example:

  • A sports content viewer may receive a sports bundle promotion.
  • A customer with repeated service issues may receive a service credit.
  • A high-value customer may receive a personalized retention offer.

The goal is not to give the biggest discount to everyone. The goal is to recommend the right action at the right time.

Skills Demonstrated Through the Project

1. Business Problem Identification

The project starts with a clear business need: reducing customer churn and improving customer lifetime value. This demonstrates the ability to connect technology to measurable business outcomes.

2. AI and Digital Innovation Strategy

StreamConnect AI combines customer analytics, churn prediction, next-best-offer logic, dashboards, and workflow automation. This shows how AI can be positioned as a business solution, not just a technical feature.

3. Project Charter Development

The project includes a formal charter with objectives, budget, scope, milestones, assumptions, risks, roles, and success criteria. This is important because every successful digital project needs structure before execution begins.

4. Agile and Hybrid Delivery Thinking

The project uses a hybrid Agile approach. Some areas, like security, architecture, and integration, require upfront planning. Other areas, like user interface design and model tuning, can be improved through iterations.

5. Schedule Management

The second deliverable focused on building a complete schedule management plan. It included WBS activities, durations, start and finish dates, predecessors, and critical path identification.

6. Critical Path Analysis

The project identified critical activities such as requirements sign-off, architecture design, data integration, AI model development, testing, UAT, training, production deployment, hypercare, and closure.

This helped show which activities could delay the entire project if not managed carefully.

Why Schedule Management Matters in Digital Innovation

One key lesson from this project is that digital innovation is not successful just because the technology is interesting.

AI, automation, and analytics only create value when the project is properly planned, sequenced, tested, adopted, and measured.

For StreamConnect AI, many workstreams are connected:

  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Data integration
  • AI model development
  • Next-best-offer configuration
  • IVR and chatbot integration
  • Security and privacy testing
  • User acceptance testing
  • Training and change readiness
  • Production deployment and hypercare

If the customer data is not ready, the AI model cannot be validated. If testing is delayed, user acceptance testing cannot start. If agents are not trained, adoption may fail even if the technology works.

This is why project management is critical in technology delivery.

Change Management Perspective

StreamConnect AI is not just a software implementation. It changes how customer-service agents make retention decisions.

Instead of relying only on individual experience or manual lookup, agents would receive AI-supported recommendations directly in their workflow.

That means change management must address:

  • Agent training
  • Supervisor adoption
  • Trust in AI recommendations
  • Communication with business users
  • Feedback loops after go-live

This project helped me understand that successful digital transformation requires alignment between technology, people, process, and business value.

Consulting and IT Services Relevance

From an IT services and consulting perspective, this project is realistic because it reflects the type of work consulting teams often deliver:

  • Understanding the client’s business problem
  • Designing a technology solution
  • Integrating enterprise systems
  • Managing delivery timelines
  • Handling risks and dependencies
  • Supporting adoption after go-live

It also demonstrates how a consultant or senior developer can think beyond code and contribute to solution design, delivery planning, business outcomes, and organizational change.

Lessons Learned

  • Digital innovation must start with a business problem. Technology should support a measurable business goal.
  • AI projects depend heavily on data readiness. Poor data quality can delay or weaken the entire solution.
  • Critical path visibility matters. It helps leaders understand which delays will impact go-live.
  • Change management is not optional. Users must trust and adopt the new system.
  • Project management connects strategy to execution. Without structure, even strong ideas can fail.

Final Thoughts

StreamConnect AI helped me apply project and change management concepts to a realistic digital innovation scenario. The project gave me an opportunity to connect AI, customer retention, media and telecom business challenges, Agile delivery, schedule planning, and stakeholder adoption into one complete example.

It is a practical portfolio example that shows how technology professionals can combine technical thinking with business strategy and project execution.

That combination is becoming increasingly important in modern IT services and consulting.
